Lower Salford Township is one of eleven member municipalities which belong to the Northern Montgomery County Recycling Commission (NMCRC). These eleven municipalities work together to increase recycling and to promote recycling awareness and education. Through the NMCRC, the Township is able to obtain DEP 904 Grant Funds for our recycling efforts. These funds are put back into the community to obtain leaf bags for our residents to purchase at a discounted cost, as well as provide recycling bins free of charge to our residents. Leaf Recycling

The Township provides a leaf/yard waste (no grass clippings) drop off location open 24/7 all year long. Leaves and yard waste in biodegradable bags may be deposited in the containers at the Township Building Parking Lot at no cost throughout the year. Biodegradable bags may be purchased at the Township Municipal Building (2 bags for $1.00 or 50 bags for $22.00.)

Open Burning Not Allowed in Lower Salford Township

Burning Policy is Dictated by Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection forbids any type**(See exceptions below) of open burning. Prior to 2010, Township policy permitted the open burning of small twigs/shrub trimmings at designated times upon obtaining a permit to do so. The option now is to cut the twigs to a small size and to place such twigs and/or shrub trimmings in a biodegradable paper bag which can be deposited in the large metal container at the Township Building Parking Lot. The open burning of any recyclables or household trash has been, and continues to be, prohibited by the Township.

**The only exceptions to the revised open burning policy are outdoor cooking, ceremonial bonfires or campfires, and burning related to the production of agriculture commodities on a farm operation. The latter two options require pre-notification to the Fire Marshal.

Any instances of alleged open burning violations should be reported to the Township Office at 215-256-8087.

Drug Recycling

Ever wonder what to do with outdated and/or unused medication?
The Lower Salford Police Department has a drop-off box for unused/expired medication. The Police Department is located at 379 Main Street, Harleysville, PA 19438. The drop-box is in their lobby.

Wheels For Wishes

This non-profit organization is a car donation program benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley. They offer an easy way to recycle or donate unwanted cars, trucks, motorcycles, SUVs, RVs, even boats, by turning them into a wish for a local child. For more information, visit their website below.

Recycling Containers

Recyclables are collected by your private trash hauler. However, the Township does provide recycling bins free of charge. Stop by the Township Office during regular business hours to pick up a recycling bin.

What To Do About Paint

Latex (water based) Paint is not a hazardous waste. Allow excess latex paint to air dry or use a commercial waste paint hardener available at hardware and paint stores. When dry, latex paint may be placed in your trash for regular pickup. Oil based paint is a hazardous waste. Save that for one of the special household hazardous collection days.
